Becoming Language
mercerized cotton, fluorescent screen printing ink, cotton twill, interfacing, zipper, metal button
2023
This pair of garments delves into the relationship between queerness and secrecy. Using yellow fluorescent ink on yellow fabric makes the printed imagery almost invisible in daylight. The print only becomes visible under blacklights, mirroring the secrecy of being closeted. The top is covered in graffiti, many of which reference queer codes and symbols such as the lambda and the labrys.
The pants echo ideas explored in Becoming Space, mimicking architecture through the use of large patch pockets adorning the sides. The pockets are made to resemble windows, although being made of fabric they are opaque instead of transparent, continuing to invoke a sense of secrecy
